Suitability of Different Methods for Measuring Black Carbon Emissions from Marine Engines

چکیده
Black carbon (BC) emissions intensify global warming and are linked to adverse health effects. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) considers the impact of BC from international shipping. A prerequisite for anticipated limits marine engines is a reliable measurement method. three candidate methods (photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS), laser-induced incandescence (LII), filter smoke number (FSN)) selected by IMO were evaluated with extensive ship exhaust matrices obtained different fuels, engines, emission control devices. few instruments targeted atmospheric measurements included as well. concentrations close each other meters (AVL 415S 415SE), PAS MSS), LII (Artium-300), MAAP 5012, aethalometers (Magee AE-33 AE-42), EC (TOA). In most cases, standard deviation between was in range 5–15% at below 30 mg Sm−3. Some differences measured these potentially related ratio light-absorbing compounds sulphates or particle sizes morphologies. addition, calibrations, sampling, correction thermophoretic loss explained results. However, overall results low despite challenging compositions diesel engines. Findings will inform decision making on

development of different optical methods for determination of glucose using cadmium telluride quantum dots and silver nanoparticles
a simple, rapid and low-cost scanner spectroscopy method for the glucose determination by utilizing glucose oxidase and cdte/tga quantum dots as chromoionophore has been described. the detection was based on the combination of the glucose enzymatic reaction and the quenching effect of h2o2 on the cdte quantum dots (qds) photoluminescence.in this study glucose was determined by utilizing glucose...
Nanoparticle Emissions from Engines
Recently concerns about possible increases in emissions of ultrafine and nanoparticles and their environmental impact have been voiced. A major problem with assessing the significance of such emissions is that, unlike the carbonaceous soot particles associated with older Diesel engines, many of these particles are not formed in the engine but instead by gas-to-particle conversion processes from...
متن کاملCarbon emissions threaten marine species
No one had great expectations about the outcome of discussions on climate change at the recent G8 summit of the world's wealthiest nations in Scotland, and the modest resulting statement did little to reassure researchers that the topic is being taken as seriously as many feel it demands. " At the heart of the communique is a disappointing failure by the leaders of the G8 unequivocally to recog...
متن کاملCharacterization of Particle and Gaseous Emissions from Marine Diesel Engines with Different Fuels and Impact of After-Treatment Technology
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) and some countries have gradually strengthened the laws regulating ship exhaust emissions. The aim of this paper is to estimate the impact of an after-treatment technology exhaust gas cleaning (EGC) system on marine diesel engine emissions and the cost advantage compared to using low-sulfur fuel oil. Th...
